India has been an active participant in peacekeeping operations (PKOs) under the United Nations (UN) since its early days of independence. The country has contributed significantly to maintaining peace and stability in various regions affected by conflict. India’s peacekeeping operations are generally carried out through United Nations Peacekeeping Missions. India is one of the largest contributors of troops to UN peacekeeping missions, and its forces have been deployed in a variety of conflict zones, such as in Kashmir, Congo, Cyprus, Sierra Leone, and Sudan. Indian peacekeepers have earned a reputation for their professionalism, neutrality, and commitment to the principles of the UN Charter.
Indian peacekeepers primarily engage in monitoring ceasefires, supervising disarmament processes, providing humanitarian aid, and ensuring the safe return of refugees. One of the notable missions India participated in was in Sri Lanka under the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) in the 1980s. The mission aimed at enforcing the peace agreement between the government of Sri Lanka and the Tamil rebels. While the mission faced challenges, particularly with the Tamil Tigers, it demonstrated India’s willingness to engage in peacekeeping efforts in its neighborhood.
Additionally, India has contributed to multinational peacekeeping operations where its forces work alongside those from other countries to maintain peace in war-torn areas. India’s philosophy in peacekeeping operations is based on neutrality, impartiality, and respect for national sovereignty.
